Japanese Toddler Group at F+U Academy of Languages

At F+U Academy of Languages Heidelberg, language programmes are on offer not only for children, teens, and adults, but also for infants and toddlers – for example, in the Japanese toddler group organized by Japanese mums in Heidelberg.

One of the group’s major purposes is to teach toddlers Japanese. Thus, during their weekly one-hour meetings, participants speak only Japanese.

Apart from learning Japanese, the group’s activities include singing, playing, and doing handicrafts, but there are also activities which aim at passing on Japanese traditions to the children, such as the Japanese art of paper folding, Origami. The group also celebrates Japanese holidays, such as the Girls Day, Boys Day, and New Year.

The toddler group is open to all parents who want their children to get in touch with Japanese language and culture. Among the group’s regular participants are children of Japanese parents living in Heidelberg, families from neighbouring towns as well as children from mixed German-Japanese families.

For Japanese mums, the toddler group meetings are an opportunity to meet and exchange with other Japanese women, which is especially important for women who have recently moved to Germany with their families. There are also some fathers who attend the meetings with their children.

The group has been running for about ten years now. Activities used to be held in other premises which, however, had to be given up. “We’re now very happy to be here”, says group member Ai. “Without the F+U Academy of Languages’ support, we would no longer be able to meet.”

Anyone interested in Japan, its language and culture, may benefit from F+U Academy of Languages’ diverse offers. Apart from Japanese language courses, F+U Academy of Languages offers vocational trainings specializing in Japanese. Once a month, the F+U’s Japan Centre holds a Japan Seminar and every two weeks, there is the opportunity to get to know the basics of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Last but not least, the annual Japan Week offers workshops on Japanese traditions and culinary specialties.
