Castles, Cars and Cannstatter Wasen: Discover German History and Culture at F+U Academy of Languages

Many students around the world associate learning German with spending lots of time in a classroom, and swotting up on hard-to-pronounce vocabulary and difficult grammar. At F+U Academy of Languages, learning German means a lot more than regular classroom activities. It means actively participating in afternoon and weekend activities that help students get immersed in Germany’s language, history, and culture.

Much appreciated by many students from all over the world, the school’s Cultural Activities programme runs the whole year through and includes three to four events every week, and six per week during July and August, a part of which are offered free of charge.

The programme helps students get in touch with fellow students and make friends in their new home. It also brings them closer to Germany’s history and culture by getting immersed in the country’s traditions and supports language acquisition by enabling students to actively practice their German outside the classroom.

At least once a month, F+U Academy of Languages holds an orientation event for new students, followed by a guided tour through Heidelberg. To help students become acquainted with the city, the school also offers hikes in the surrounding mountains, a cruise on the river Neckar, or the weekly evening Stammtisch, a traditional German get-together in a pub. The most-loved excursion is, of course, the visit to Heidelberg Castle, the city’s most famous attraction.

The weekends are reserved for trips to places farther away, and students can make most of their time in Germany during all seasons. Students can witness the grand carnival parades in February or try Äppelwoi at Frankfurt’s cidre festival in the summer, visit the Cannstatter Wasen (Stuttgart’s equivalent to the Oktoberfest), or experience German Christmas traditions at the Nuremberg Christmas market in December.

Students who like to stay at home may go for a Schnitzel lunch in one of Heidelberg’s restaurants. Those who fancy cars will get their money’s worth at the popular Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, which houses spectacular samples from all eras in the history of the automobile.
