Frequently asked questions about F+U language school

F+U language courses in Heidelberg

How do I join the right group?
On the first school day you will write a placement test, so that you join the right class level. As a rule, you will receive a test by email before you arrive. But it is better if you download the test at home and send it to us before your arrival.

What happens if I don’t feel comfortable in the group I’m placed in?
Speak to a member of the F+U team, who will help you find a suitable solution. Every week you will find many different levels, so that there will not be a problem to find the suitable level for you.

Do I receive a certificate of participation?
If your attendance has been regular, you will receive a school certificate of participation at the end of the course. This will confirm the most recent class level, the type and duration of the course and the number of teaching hours taken.

Can I gain an internationally recognised certificate at F+U?
F+U is a recognised test centre for a number of language examinations. Please refer to the exam overview at our language centre.

Where are F+U students from and how old are they?
Our language students come from a variety of countries - last year, we were able to count over 90 different nationalities! The average age of our students is 22-24 during the summer, and 22-26 during the winter. However, older students are far from the exception!

Registering for a language course in Heidelberg

How far in advance do I have to book a language course?
Naturally, it’s better if you can book your language course well in advance - particularly in the case of accommodation, this will be a definite advantage. We are happy to accept bookings at short notice, but please bear in mind that in such cases we are not able to meet all preferences concerning accommodation.

How can I register for a language course in Heidelberg?
You can register online (please see Online Registration Language Courses in Heidelberg), by fax, by e-mail (languages@fuu.de) or by post. Please use our registration form, available for you to easily download and print.

How and when do I receive booking confirmation?
Within 24 hours you will receive a booking confirmation from us by email. If you have not provided an email address, the confirmation will be sent by post straight away.

Do I have to pay a registration fee for every course?
Our registration fee of just 20 Euros is a one-off payment. Even if you book another course a year later, you won’t need to pay another registration fee.

Can I extend the language course when I’m already there?
As a rule, it isn’t a problem to extend the language course, but the accommodation may already be booked for this period. In this case, we will suggest alternative accommodation.

How and when do I have to pay for a language course?
Payment is to be made within 15 days at the latest prior to the start of the course (for short-notice bookings immediate payment is required) by bank transfer, credit card (debit authorisation); or in the school by cash, EC or credit card. We accept Visa and Mastercard.

Do I need to pay a deposit?
No, you don’t need to pay a deposit, just the full payment within 15 days prior to the start of the course.

Do I have to book accommodation through F+U or can I also look for accommodation myself?
You are not obliged in any way to book accommodation through F+U.

Which other expenses are there besides the language course and accommodation?
The registration fee, if you are booking a course with F+U for the first time, and the lesson materials. If you participate in leisure activities, you need to bear in mind that admission and travel tickets are not included. Also, if you book accommodation you can also book a transfer to the accommodation.

Which insurance is required?
We recommend foreign health insurance coverage for your stay. If you intend to stay in Germany for a longer time, we recommend you take out a reasonably priced insurance policy with Care Concept. You can take out insurance online in advance, or we can provide you with forms when you are in the school.

Accommodation with host families

How are host families chosen?
Families are carefully selected by our staff. Not all families have children - the family may be a single lady or a couple.

Can I change host family when I am there if I don’t feel comfortable with the family?
Please speak to the responsible member of staff in the language course. Together, you will try to resolve the problem. Should the problem be insurmountable, you will be allocated a new family.

When do I receive the accommodation address?
You will receive the accommodation address as soon as possible, but at the latest 10 days before your arrival.

What happens if I have special preferences for the host family?
You may state any preference concerning the accommodation in your registration. If at all possible, we will be happy to meet these preferences.

Is laundry done by the host family?
Yes, usually the host family does the laundry for the student, but in a few cases you need to use a launderette.

Do I share the bathroom with the family?
Usually yes - only a few families have a number of bathrooms.

Accommodation in student halls of residence and apartments

Are bed linen and towels provided?
Bed linen is provided - we ask you to bring your own towels.

When and where do I receive the key for the room / apartment?
Please bear in mind that there is no reception in the halls of residence or apartments. Therefore, a key hand-over has to be organised. It is very important that, at the latest 5 days before your arrival, you inform us of your exact arrival time, even if you have not booked a transfer through F+U.

Leisure activities at the language school

What is offered during free time?
The F+U leisure programme is varied and changes every week. Regular features are a guided city tour for new arrivals, a party in a historically listed cellar in the Heidelberg Old Town and a weekly “Stammtisch” (regulars’ gathering). Besides these, leisure activities include cultural excursions (half or all day) as well as social and sporting activities. The current programme is pinned every week on our notice board.

How often are the activities offered by the school?
We offer one acitivity per day, sometimes two. In July and August we also offer to our students an interesting programme at weekends and on bank holidays.

How do I register for the activities?
Put your name in the activities list at the school's office one day before the activity you wish to attend.

Is the leisure programme included in the course price?
The organisation of the activities is included in the course price. Not included are admission and any travel costs. Information about cost is given when the programme is announced.

Do I have to participate in the leisure activities?
It is up to you whether you participate in the activities or not.

If we didn’t manage to answer your question - please send us an email, we’ll happily make up for it! languages@fuu.de
